James and Emily
Past year
Over the course of this year we have proven our ability to lead a successful society. Members have benefited from a risk free live trading account and seminars from a leading City firm.
We hosted a successful trading competition for our members with cash prizes. This is something that we would like to do again but on a regular basis.
We would like to continue our work in the capacity of presidents and further develop the portfolio. Now that the trading account is up and running a priority would be to arrange for more City firms to visit Queen Mary therefore allowing members to network and gain valuable contacts for future careers.
Over the course of the year both Emily and James have secured internships at prestigious City firms. Once these have been completed in September both hope to be able to pass on experiences gained over the summer and leverage contacts for the benefit of QMTIS.
Virtual trading Account
Following on from our successful trading competition earlier in the year, we would like to have a permanent ‘QMTIS’ league. Within this each member of the Society would be able to have their own virtual trading account and therefore a competition could be run amongst members.
It is our hope that members will be engaged with both the Society trading account and their own virtual accounts which are also in league against each other, this will ensure a good amount of members attend weekly meetings to discuss their trading strategy. By having a permanent trading league we would have monthly prizes and a competitive atmosphere in which to develop trading strategies.
Industry and Networking Events
James has been working on a London wide Networking Society that has been created at the University of London Union. Investmentality will provide exciting opportunities to pool resources, contacts and importantly events with other Universities from around London.
As one of the first societies to sign up to Investmentality, QMTIS has been leading the way to a more united network of finance/business societies in London.
With a similar idea a group of students from Oxford are in the process of setting up a similar network but on a national scale. QMTIS are the first society at QM to be approached for inclusion into this national network – testament to our presidency over the past year.
Summary
The coming academic year as well as the, hopefully, global economic recovery will present many exciting opportunities for the societies trading portfolio.
As mentioned there are other intuitions that share our interest in working collectively for members of finance/business related societies. QMTIS has become well connected to many of these movements over the past year and is in prime position to buck the trend of collaboration and therefore crucially establish greater opportunities for our members.
Vote James and Emily for your QMTIs Presidents!
Bradley Webb and Sharif Ahmed
Bradley Webb Background:
I am currently in my third year studying for an MSc in Mathematics and I have a huge interest in financial mathematics and its application to the stock market. I first attended the society last year and can relate with people who have no previous knowledge of financial markets, which was my case when I joined. However having taken finance related modules and through reading in my spare time, I have progressed to a level where I am now trading my own account on a regular basis.
My mathematical background has given me excellent organizational and record keeping skills plus great confidence in handling figures. I am a person who keeps on top of my work and if elected I would make a regular time commitment to the society and looking after its finances. Last summer I completed an internship in Tax with Jarvis & Co an Accountancy firm and my previous part time job was in the wages department of Luminar Plc. With these qualities and past experience I believe I have the right attributes for the position of treasurer.
Sharif Ahmed Background:
I am a first year student studying Computer Science with Business Management with a passion for the financial markets, hoping to forge a potential career in the City. After I completed my A-levels I spent my gap year working in the Risk Consulting arm of KPMG. I gained invaluable experience working with various blue chip multinational companies and financial professionals.
In my previous capacity as treasurer of a family run charity I gained first-hand experience managing the books and overseeing investments. This is a role which introduced me to specific skills and one which also allowed me to spend my time for a worthwhile cause.
I am committed to further increasing my knowledge of the financial markets and actively contributing towards making QMTIS one of the most successful, engaging and enjoyable societies on campus.
Our Manifesto/Pledges:
We are both highly motivated and organized individuals and are actively working towards a career in The City. For these reasons we would be well suited to running a successful Trading and Investment Society.
Building a Foundation – From the discussion towards the end of the year, we all noticed at the start of the year many of our members may have had little or no knowledge of the financial markets. We believe it would be beneficial to build a platform for our members to grow their knowledge from the offset and gradually build on their knowledge and ultimately have the confidence and incentive to trade.
We hope to keep our freshers’ group interested by showing live trading in the first few sessions to help guide them through and provide a visual aid to those new to trading and investments.
Trading Competition – In addition to our individual trading competition, we believe a team trading competition could also be run. Our idea is to group into teams and have a trading competition with virtual money. This competition could run alongside our real account. We hope to place a current member of the committee with every team of new members it would encourage turnout and give new members ideas for new trades. This also has the added bonus of improving and honing our members’ problem solving, mathematical/financial and teamwork skills.
Guest Speakers & Networking Events – We hope to have many guest speakers coming in from various backgrounds and industries. It will give members a chance to gain an insight into some of the most competitive careers in the financial industry and how to equip themselves with important competencies that are highly sought after by huge organisations. This will present an opportunity to seek advice from high calibre professionals, who studied at some of the best universities in the country and worked for some of the top most respected companies.
Social Events – It’s not all about the profits or losses or the outlook for the euro! We aim to get our members away from the monotony of numbers and graphs regularly by hosting monthly drinks, lunches and outings. This will also help the committee develop relationships with our members and find out how people are getting on.
Trips – Societies should not be hunkered down in meeting rooms for the entire academic year, so as mentioned above we plan to shake things up with financial adventures and trips. We hope to organise trips to different exchanges, visits to the heart of the insurance industry etc to provide members with a real life insight into the life of a City professional.
